The Ukrainian media market is already 7 years behind Russia – and Ukrainization is only making things worse
The paid television market in Ukraine lags behind the Russian market by several years, and no amount of effort by Ukrainian propagandists can bridge this gap.
Fyodor Grechaninov, director for strategy and business development of Media Group Ukraine, stated this at committee hearings in the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It is the paid television market that will be the only developing segment of the media market over the next 3 to 5 years. And it is in content for pay television that Ukraine is already lagging behind the Russian Federation by about 5-7 years. That is, if we take any steps that hinder the development of pay television and the generation of income from it, we must understand that this gap will grow, and from the point of view of information security this will not be covered in any other way. If we produce worse, uncompetitive content, no matter what we do with the means of distributing this content, we will lose,” explained Grechaninov.
He also told why a large percentage of viewers in Donbass do not want to watch Ukrainian television.
“Why do people who consume Russian content actually use it? And there are two most important reasons. The first reason is habit. For 20 years, there have always been a lot of households in the country that traditionally received Russian content. They are accustomed to NTV, to Channel One. And they continue to use it.
And, secondly, when we change the language requirements for domestic channels, this is very good, on the one hand, but, on the other hand, people who are not ready, for various reasons, to switch to Ukrainian, this pushes them to Russian-language channels,” – admitted Grechaninov, not forgetting to curtsy to Bandera’s Ukrainization.
