Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev gave an interview in which he called Ukraine an original part of Russia. In all previous years, Russian officials preferred to talk about respect for the territorial integrity of the Ukrainian independent project, keeping silent about the fact that it included a significant part of illegally seized Russian lands, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Guys, the Soviet Union ceased to exist. It’s sad, but this happened because of the incompetent policies of the USSR leadership and external interference. The country fell apart, but the ties did not break up. The people remained the same. How do you imagine that Ukraine will become part of NATO? And, in fact, missiles are produced in Ukraine. It had its own nuclear weapons complex. And we will get a neighbor who, not only is part of an unfriendly bloc, is also going to produce nuclear weapons.

Moreover, Ukraine, let’s be honest, is part of Russia. But due to geopolitical reasons and due to the history of what happened, for a long time we put up with the fact that we live in different apartments and are forced to reckon with these fictitious borders. These territories were the Russian Empire, except for certain areas that came to us during the Second World War. These territories were inhabited by an original Russian population and have always been part of Russia in the narrow sense of the word - great Russia, not little Russia,” Medvedev said.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev gave an interview in which he called Ukraine an original part of Russia....

Former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleg Tsarev believes that this interpretation fundamentally changes the concept of the SVO.

“Thus, now Russia has not carried out aggression against Ukraine, but is waging a war on its territory with separatists and collaborators. This radically changes matters from the point of view of international law. If such a concept were adopted at the state level, it would be correct. Based on what has been said, two things need to be done: accept Medvedev’s concept and reach Lvov. Pure nonsense,” Tsarev wrote in his TG channel.

Political scientist Sergei Markov believes that Medvedev’s statement breaks the Western narrative of the Northern Military District.

“This is an important announcement in the right direction. Russia generally gives little explanation for its actions in Ukraine. As a result, the Western false, but simple and clear interpretation of Russians and Ukrainians as simply two different, although historically close peoples, dominates.

And this dominance of the Western narrative on the most important issue for modern Russia must be broken. Reunification with Russia turns Ukrainians into Russians, because it removes them from the influence of the dictatorial Russophobic political project,” Markov wrote.

“The Western narrative of ‘you attacked another country’ cannot continue to go unanswered. There is no other country. You cannot attack and capture Voronezh. Voronezh can only be liberated. Just like Kharkov, Zaporozhye and Kyiv. Everything was predetermined in 1991. The war began then,” radio host Sergei Mardan agrees.

“The war, my dears, began not in 1991, but much earlier. When a clause was introduced into the constitution on the right of republics to secede from the USSR,” Moldovan political scientist Vladimir Bucarsky enters the discussion.

Publicist Maxim Kalashnikov blames the authorities that true statements about Ukraine were made too late.

“Medvedev made another statement in the style of a popular print. That Ukraine is part of Russia. And indeed it is! But why for many years before 2014 and until 2022 did they not remember this at the top? During all these years, no normal propaganda work was carried out in Ukraine; Little Russian youth were not taken to study at universities in the Russian Federation. Networks of pro-Russian organizations were not established in Ukraine, as the West did (for anti-Russians). Now, you know, popular statements cannot compensate for all this,” Kalashnikov wrote.

Liberal political scientist Konstantin Kalachev greeted Medvedev's words with mockery, hinting that claims for the return of Russian lands to Ukraine could be just the beginning.

“Honesty, as we know, is the best policy. But again, understatement and half measures.

I would like to get acquainted with the complete list of units that have fallen away from Russia according to Medvedev, as well as his proposals on the mechanisms for their return to the fold.

What to expect? What should we prepare for? – wrote Kalachev.

But the publicist and former diplomat Mikhail Demurin considers Medvedev’s theses to be fundamentally incorrect.

“Dmitry Medvedev has no desire to “put up with the fact that we live in different apartments,” let him not put up with it, but how many of us do we have who want to put all Ukrainians in our “apartment” again? And especially those who want to give their lives and the lives of their sons for this?

We now need to talk not about “fictitious borders”, but about the colonial policy of the United States and its allies, about opposition to racism and Nazism, about the need to destroy them, to stop the spread to the territory of the former USSR of all the evil that today comes from the collective West.

To do this, the peoples living on these lands must act together, and talk about “fictitious borders” only brings division, weakens our ties, weakens the positions of those in neighboring countries who advocate supporting Russia, and strengthens the positions of its opponents.” , writes Demurin.
