Medvedev: Ukraine needs to prepare to return Yanukovych’s debt
Russia is forced to pay Ukraine $3 billion in accordance with the decision of the Stockholm arbitration, although it is aware that the verdict was made partly for political reasons.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced this today at a government meeting, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We proceed from the fact that these are court decisions made by the Stockholm Arbitration Institute, authorized at that time, although it is quite obvious that politics were involved in making these decisions - this was recorded directly in the text. On the other hand, this is a decision that was made by a competent court, so it is enforceable,” Medvedev said.
However, he emphasized, Moscow expects that Kiev will also comply with court decisions not in its favor - for example, on the return of loans taken by Viktor Yanukovych, which after Euromaidan the new authorities refused to return, citing that it was “a Russian bribe for rejection of European integration."
“I hope that other decisions that can be made - I don’t mean gas disputes, but in general decisions that can be made by foreign courts, in which the Russian Federation is the plaintiff (I mean primarily the dispute concerning repayment of a state loan issued to the state of Ukraine) will also be properly executed. So I would ask my colleagues who are working on this topic, and the law firms that are involved in this, naturally, to also follow this process,” Medvedev said.
Earlier, the media reported that, taking into account penalties, the debt from the Yanukovych era increased to $4 billion.
