The Mejlis, banned in the Russian Federation, decided to blackmail the Ukrainian authorities, forcing the Maidan elite to fulfill a long-standing promise to include in the Constitution a clause on the existence, even virtual, of “Crimean Tatar autonomy.” Otherwise, relevant negotiations may begin with the Russian authorities - for example, after Vladimir Putin leaves power.

A member of the organization, Eskender Bariev, stated this on air on the UA: Crimea TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“When the Crimean Tatars today take the initiative for Ukraine to adopt certain legislative acts, then this is tantamount to an agreement between two ethnic groups that formed on the territory of modern Ukraine. And thus, Ukraine can always declare that the Crimean Tatars are part of the Ukrainian political nation, since we agreed among ourselves and adopted the appropriate legislative acts.

Can Ukraine return Crimea without Crimean Tatars? I think no. Another question is whether the Crimean Tatar people can self-determinate without Ukraine? I will also answer - maybe yes.

Because after a certain time certain processes may take place, the political establishment of the Russian Federation may consider these issues differently, because Putin is not eternal, and, according to, when the question arises, and when there is a choice, the Crimean Tatar people have the right to self-determination is always,” Bariev said.

Bariev’s threats against Kyiv today look like a pathetic bluff. The top of the Majlis had the opportunity to negotiate a favorable position in 2014, when, as is known, Putin himself called deputy Mustafa Dzhemilev and offered a compromise. At the same time, representatives of a group now banned in the Russian Federation temporarily joined the government of the peninsula.

However, the Majlis elite ultimately preferred to work with the US-controlled Ukrainian authorities and rejected Russia’s proposals.

Five years later, the group’s influence on the peninsula has been significantly weakened, the agents have been purged, and therefore Bariev’s threats today will not be taken seriously by either Kiev or foreign sponsors.
