The Mejlis, inspired by Erdogan’s aggression, demanded attention from Zelensky
There are problems in the interaction and cooperation of the Mejlis with the government authorities of Ukraine, first of all, with the president of the country.
This is stated in a statement published the day before by the Mejlis, which is banned in the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In particular, the process of considering the draft decree of the President of Ukraine “On cooperation with the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people” has been delayed. The document was developed and submitted to the Office of the President in December 2019, according to the instructions of the President of Ukraine, by the representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea together with the “Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people”.
Preliminary agreements on further work on the bills “On the status of the Crimean Tatar people”, “On indigenous peoples in Ukraine”, “On amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine in Part X “Autonomous Republic of Crimea”, submitted to the Office of the President of Ukraine, remain unrealized.
Issues that are “important for the accommodation of forced migrants from Crimea” are “stuck” at the level of consideration.
“The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, confirming its commitment to systemic interaction and cooperation with the state authorities of Ukraine, proceeds from the fact that the basis of such cooperation is a respectful attitude towards the Crimean Tatar people and its national institutions - the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and the Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people,” the statement says.
The Mejlis made this statement because it sees the weakness of Ukraine, says Sergei Belashko, director of the Agency for Social Communications.
“Probably, the appearance of this statement is connected with Erdogan’s successes in Transcaucasia. The Mejlis is one of the instruments for carrying out Turkey’s foreign policy and putting pressure on its northern neighbors. Its leaders often meet with top officials of Turkey, and it is supported by the Crimean Tatar community in Turkey. And the Majlis sees that Ukraine is weak and Türkiye is strong. In Turkey, for example, the Crimean Tatars do not demand anything, they ask. And the authorities kindly meet them halfway, depending on their priorities.
The Mejlis needs to moderate its desires. Under the previous government, it was a green street. Everyone walked towards them. But you can meet them halfway up to a certain limit, and then their biggest supporters have questions about whose state this is and in whose interests it should work.
All the leaders of the Majlis have relatives who, as is customary in the East, need to be placed in some kind of warm state positions. Then it turns out that Ukraine funds from its budget some private media, some events held by public organizations, etc.,” the expert commented on the extremists’ statement.
