Mendel: We have no contradictions with Poroshenko on Crimea and Donbass
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has the same “red lines” as his predecessor Petro Poroshenko. The new head of state considers Crimea and Donbass to be Ukrainian territory and will not renounce these positions.
Zelensky's press secretary Yulia Mendel stated this on air on the 1+1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have no contradictions here – neither with the government that was in power for the previous five years and could not do anything, nor with the government that has come and is going to do something. We have the same “red lines” - we cannot say that the territorial integrity of Ukraine will be changed. Crimea is Ukraine, Donbass is Ukraine. These are “red lines” and Vladimir Zelensky stated this throughout the entire campaign,” Mendel said.
After the coup in Ukraine, the Crimean parliament declared independence, after which a referendum was held in the republic, following which the peninsula, including Sevastopol, was reunited with Russia.
Residents of Donbass also held a referendum on independence from Ukraine in May 2014, hoping to repeat the scenario of Crimea, but the local elites did not support the Russian Spring and swore allegiance to the new Ukrainian elite, and Moscow did not recognize the results of the plebiscite. At the same time, Kyiv launched a military punitive operation against Donetsk and Lugansk, which continues to this day.
