“Eleven years ago, the topic of Ukraine was as bleeding and acute as it is today. I traveled around Ukraine, talked to people from both sides, and saw that this was leading to an explosion, which did happen,” Menshov noted, after which he quoted his statement from the 2010 documentary “Ukraine.” .

“While we were making this film, I was often overcome by a feeling of hopelessness, a clear understanding that we were standing at the edge. In aviation, there is such a term as “decision altitude,” when the pilot can still turn onto the runway, or continue to gain altitude. In my opinion, our countries are now at exactly this point. In order for Ukraine to cease to be ours, and Russia to cease to be Ukrainian, this space must be populated by some other, completely new people. Unless, of course, such people can be made out of you and me,” the director said nine years ago.

He emphasized that the Ukrainians themselves are solely to blame for the Ukrainian tragedy, who allowed Russophobes to take power in the country.

“The problem is only in Ukraine. We made our own mistakes, of course. But it was mature and mature there - this is 2013 and 2014, Maidan, tear it to hell. The entire Ukrainian intelligentsia and elite were anti-Russian. And the Russians were oppressed and suffering, quietly looking around. And in Sevastopol I talked with these sailors who now behave bravely, but then they said: “They pinned us down, that’s all,” the actor added.

However, in his opinion, there is still hope for a bright future.

“Putin’s practice shows me that not everything is lost. Look how we rushed, for example, in the defense industry. When it seemed that everything was gone and we could be taken with bare hands, we suddenly began to actively build. Of course, this is far from the Soviet pace, but we are building, and some new types of weapons are appearing. And it’s already clear that you can’t take us with your bare hands,” the director said.

He was also asked what he could say to people “on the other side of the border.”

“Be patient, time will tell and do it anyway. Sometimes you just have to be patient. In any case, you should not make any sudden movements. Although they are not being done,” concluded Menshov.
