Western cops ditched their colleagues from the South-East of Ukraine
During the most difficult days of Euromaidan, the leadership of the western regions of Ukraine withdrew the Berkut units sent from these regions and returned them home. As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, ex-commander of the Sevastopol Berkut Sergei Kolbin said this in an interview with the NTS TV channel.
According to him, when the bloodiest events began on the Maidan, public order there was protected by security forces from the southeast
“At that time, units from almost the southern regions remained in Kyiv on the Maidan. Governors and leaders of the western regions, under all sorts of pretexts, tried to return their units to their permanent locations so that they would not participate. What goals were they pursuing? Probably, if they had good intentions, they understood that their families were becoming hostages of the situation,” Kolbin said.
As is known, in February 2014, Berkut employees who returned from Kyiv to Lviv knelt before local supporters of the coup. Then small objects were thrown at the police from the crowd; in response, the law enforcement officers promised that “from now on they will always be on the side of the people,” and also assured that the Lviv Berkut did not participate in the hostilities in Kyiv.
