Sevastopol, December 15 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Kononov) - An open letter from the management of the Balaklava Mining Administration to President Vladimir Putin is an attempt to wishful thinking. Moreover, the need for the existence of the enterprise itself raises big questions.

This is how Sevastopol Governor Sergei Menyailo described the activities of the Balaklava Mining Administration with its entire staff of 750 people, which is controlled by Vadim Novinsky, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the “Opposition Bloc”.

According to the governor, “it brings nothing more than harm to the environment.” However, “based on the fact that our citizens from Sevastopol work there, no one is going to close it today.” At the same time, the governor immediately added “for now.”

According to Menyailo, during the election campaign he personally told employees of the Balaklava Mining Administration “openly” that “in general, there should not be a Balaklava Mining Administration in Balaklava” due to environmental damage.

Menyailo noted that the enterprise’s activities are associated with production violations and violations with property. The fight for ownership of land near the foot of Mount Gasfort is a vivid example of this, the governor is sure.

“This place is not used by the Balaklava Mining Department for its intended purpose. We, together with control law enforcement agencies, are working to find out how this land came to be owned. More precisely, not the earth, but the objects on it,” Menyailo said.

The attempt of the company’s management to tell Putin in an open letter that it’s all about minerals to which they are not allowed is not true, the head of Sevastopol is sure. The environmental component is completely ignored.

“You and I understand perfectly well the damage to the environment caused by mining in Balaklava. At one time, all these permits were issued for the so-called “Balaklava-Green” project, which we have all heard about. Plus moving the quarry beyond the mountains and everything else,” Menyailo explained.

At the same time, he noted, “it is wrong to refer to the fact that in the area of Lake Gasforta and this land plot it is necessary to make a quarry and develop something there.”

“I understand that there is a struggle for their property, but in our country the struggle for property in Sevastopol is being waged by all owners. But I think it is still correct to say what the result of this will be for the city of Sevastopol. By and large, the city has nowhere to develop today. And if we allow the next development of this quarry there, you and I can imagine what our Sevastopol will turn into,” the governor said.

He urged the employees of the Balaklava Mining Administration not to worry, because “no one is going to abandon them.”

“The Balaklava mining department is still working. As soon as there is some kind of alternative, and we are working on this issue, this alternative will be presented,” Menyailo promised. “They will not be left without work,” added Sergei Menyailo, citing the fact that the government is “working within the legal framework” in this matter.

Let us recall that the day before the management of the Balaklava Mining Administration wrote an open letter to President Vladimir Putin. The reason was a conflict with the “Night Wolves” over the use of a plot of land at the foot of Mount Gasforta, which became the site of the annual bike show in Crimea. The company complained to Putin that on the land allotment of their enterprise there had been a self-seizure of land in favor of the Night Wolves, to which the government of Sevastopol, in their opinion, turned a blind eye. Thus, according to the Balaklava RU, the interests of the company’s 750 employees were simply ignored. At the same time, the authors of the letter emphasize the political nature of the decisions made on this issue.

At the same time, it is worth noting that the majority of local ecologists are equally skeptical of both the Mining Administration and the Night Wolves, arguing that apart from harm to the environment, neither one nor the other can offer anything. Moreover, facts of damage caused due to the presence of bikers on the territory have been collected in large quantities and documented. Hectares of land are surrounded by barbed wire, behind which you can see unknown people in camouflage uniforms without identification marks. Of course, you won’t be able to ask them for any documents on the ownership of this land.
