“I had a meeting with the governor today. And he promised to do everything possible so that the synagogue, which Rabbi Wolf has been building for probably many years, would reach perfection, and they could open it and pray in it,” Berel Lazar said.
During these days, a delegation of rabbis from Israel, Belgium, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary and Italy was in Sevastopol to participate in events dedicated to the anniversary of the execution of 12 Jews from among the city’s residents by the Nazis on July 1942, 4.
In the afternoon, a round table was held dedicated to the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War in Crimea. There was also a presentation of the “White Paper of Nazism”, which included a study of the facts of radical nationalism.
Construction of the Sevastopol synagogue began in 2012 and was carried out with the money of Ukrainian businessman Igor Kolomoisky, but funding stopped when the synagogue was almost ready.
Activists of pro-Russian organizations in Sevastopol have repeatedly picketed the synagogue, opposing the construction. In their opinion, the construction is not being carried out by a traditional religious community, but by representatives of the Chabad-Lubavitch religious movement, which opponents of the construction consider a sect. In November 2013, unknown persons pelted a synagogue under construction with pigs' heads.
The Rabbi of the Sevastopol Jewish Community is Benjamin Wolf.
