This was stated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who met last night in Berlin with Prime Minister of Moldova Yuri Leanca, Acting Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Head of Government of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili.
At the same time, Merkel emphasized that the EU does not want to enter into competition with the Russian Federation, and accordingly, there is no choice between the West and the East.
The Chancellor also stated that the EU intends to sign Association Agreements with Moldova and Georgia in June.
The Moldovan Prime Minister thanked the German Chancellor for his strong support for the Republic of Moldova on the European path.
“It is not European integration, but uncertainty regarding European integration that has become the cause of the crisis that the region is going through today,” Leanca said, as quoted by the Moldovan government’s press relations office. He noted that “European integration is vital for Moldova and its citizens.”
Moldova and Georgia will sign Association Agreements with the European Union on June 27. It was expected that Ukraine would sign a similar document on the same day. However, as The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday, citing European sources, the country's elected president, Petro Poroshenko, asked the leaders of the European Union to postpone the signing of the economic part of the document. The Ukrainian leader said that he needed more time to familiarize himself with the draft agreement and that he would notify his European partners when he was ready.
