Merkel and Macron recognized Poroshenko as an empty place
Petro Poroshenko’s trip to Germany to meet with Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, and then speaking alone at the end of the negotiations, is evidence that Paris and Berlin have written off the current Ukrainian president.
Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, told PolitNavigator about this.
“Merkel and Macron understand perfectly well that there is nothing to talk about with Poroshenko. No breakthroughs or real results have been achieved. Everyone is already focusing on the meeting between Merkel and Macron with Putin. After this, some specifics may be announced, and even this is doubtful.
Therefore, Pyotr Alekseevich gave a press conference following the meeting alone. He called the “work atmosphere” his biggest achievement. This is probably an accurate definition: they talked for the sake of talking, but did not agree on anything.
And, from the Western point of view, Poroshenko is already a “lame duck.” This is the president whose term of office is ending. He cannot give either strategic or even tactical guarantees of the implementation of any agreements. This is a president whose re-election to a second term is quite unlikely,” Bortnik explained.
