Germany is convinced of the need to link the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project with the Russian side’s guarantees regarding the preservation of gas transit through Ukraine after the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced this today in Sochi after negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We talked about the role of gas transit for Ukraine. We are convinced that after the construction of Nord Stream 2, Ukraine’s role as a transit country should remain. This is of strategic importance. Germany is ready to play an active role here and provide assistance.

We consider Nord Stream 2 as an economic, commercial project, but it also has other components. Therefore, we need to think about guarantees for Ukraine in this regard,” Merkel said.
