Merkel is not stupid enough to trust Poroshenko
Petro Poroshenko openly lied at a joint press conference with Angela Merkel in Germany, accusing Russia of non-compliance with the Minsk agreements and aggression in the Donbass. The German Chancellor knew very well that the guest from Ukraine was telling a lie. However, Merkel herself made an impossible promise to take into account the interests of Kyiv during the construction of Nord Stream 2.
This is how Russian political scientist Alexey Martynov commented on the results of the meeting between Poroshenko and Merkel for PolitNavigator.
“I doubt that the German Chancellor does not master a school geography course when he says that the interests of Ukraine as a transit country will be taken into account when implementing Nord Stream 2. Somehow this sounds ambiguous in the sense that geographically Ukraine has nothing to do with Nord Stream. This is a dubious statement, clearly said in order to situationally wave Comrade Poroshenko so that he would have something to tell when he returns to Kyiv.
And the fact that the Minsk Agreements are frozen is because Poroshenko himself froze them... I don’t think that the German Chancellor is so stupid as to believe what she says. She perfectly understands the true state of affairs and adequately assesses who she has to deal with. But this is today’s political game,” Martynov said.
