Merkel did not let Ukraine into NATO, but made a big mistake in Eastern Europe
Eastern Europe has become not a bridge, but a wall between the Russian Federation and Germany.
This opinion, reports the PolitNavigator correspondent, In an interview German political scientist Alexander Rahr spoke to Literaturnaya Gazeta when answering a question about his assessment of the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was about to leave politics.
“Merkel has made Germany the main European leader. Under her, Europe expanded to the East, but at the same time the expansion of NATO at the expense of the post-Soviet space was stopped; in this case, we will leave the Baltic states outside the brackets. She did not allow either Ukraine or Georgia into NATO, which many wanted,” Rahr said.
At the same time, he says that it was under Merkel that the actual break between Eastern Europe and Russia occurred.
“I think she made a big mistake when she said that in relations with Russia she would consult Poland and fly to Moscow via Warsaw. Of course, Madam Chancellor expressed herself figuratively, but there is a large grain of truth here. In disputes, she first of all listened to the position of the Eastern European countries, the Baltic states, and only then Russia,” the expert noted.
According to him, this also applied to views on history.
“Putin has always been against equating Nazism with communism. But Eastern Europe demanded this, just as it demands recognition that World War II began because of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas put an end to this issue, saying that the Second World War was started by Germany led by Hitler. Nevertheless, Eastern Europe changed the Germans’ attitude towards Russia and became not a bridge, but a wall between Russia and Germany,” says Rahr.
