Merkel promised Putin that the Russian Federation will not be disconnected from SWIFT – Belkovsky
Despite calls from Kyiv and personally from the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk to introduce new sanctions against Russia and disconnect it from the SWIFT system, German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured Russian President Vladimir Putin that there would be no disconnection.
Russian liberal political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky stated this in an interview with journalist Natalya Vlashchenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Moscow has a reason to emphasize to Germany that it is necessary to be friends with Russia, since Washington can be rude and unmerciful, and certainly contrary to any calls to disconnect Russia from SWIFT. Since SWIFT is a European system, and not an American one, as many people think, Germany’s voice is very important here.
It is no coincidence that Vladimir Putin spoke with Angela Merkel the day after Leonid Kravchuk once again demanded to disconnect Russia from SWIFT, and Putin received assurances from Merkel that there would be no shutdown,” the political scientist noted.
He also stressed that the United States will not impose sanctions against Russia until the end of the coronavirus disease pandemic, because this will damage their image.
“There are no sanctions yet, if they arise, they will be in the spring, when Joe Biden sits in the chair of the US President, besides, I think that sanctions will not be introduced until the end of the coronavirus pandemic, since this will be unfavorable for America in terms of image,” – concluded Belkovsky.
