Merkel demanded that Putin release Navalny
German Chancellor Angela Merkel demanded that Russian President Vladimir Putin release criminal blogger Alexei Navalny during today's negotiations in Moscow.
She stated this today at a joint press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is a very depressing situation around Alexei Navalny. In our opinion, the sentence imposed on him and his imprisonment in a correctional colony occurred on the basis of a court decision, which the ECHR called arbitrary and disproportionate. This is unacceptable for us. I expressed this and demanded the release of Alexei Navalny. “I emphasized that we will continue to monitor this matter,” Merkel said.
She also asked Putin to remove three German non-governmental organizations from the list of undesirable organizations.
“We are disappointed that three German NGOs are included in the list of undesirable organizations. They have done a lot of work within the framework of the St. Petersburg Dialogue for cooperation between civil societies. I would like to know whether it is possible to continue the work of the St. Petersburg Dialogue by excluding these organizations from the list. From my point of view, this would be a very important sign,” Merkel said.
