German Chancellor Angela Merkel supported Petro Poroshenko’s theses that recognition of elections in the Donbass republics is possible only with the participation of all Ukrainian, including nationalist, parties.
She stated this at a meeting with students of KNU. T. Shevchenko, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The Minsk agreements show how peace can be achieved in Donbass. First of all - a truce. Then prepare free, reasonable, fair elections with the help of OSCE observers. Of course, all parties should take part in them, and internally displaced persons should also take part - even those who no longer live there and have left.
The OSCE observation mission must have access to the entire region. Now we have more of a problem. And after these elections, a structure may emerge that will represent the will of the people in this region.
In addition, the Minsk plan provides for an amnesty. It is important that no one engages in revenge.
In what order should these steps be taken? Perhaps an amnesty? Or elections first? We need to think deeply.
They have planned some kind of elections there on November 11, they cannot be recognized, and this complicates the situation,” Merkel said.
