Merkel called on the West to strengthen defense and prepare for dialogue with Russia
Western countries should be ready for dialogue with Russia, but at the same time they must increase their defense capabilities, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This opinion was expressed on Thursday by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking in the Bundestag with a government statement, DW reports.
“We must develop our military capabilities, but at the same time our proposals for dialogue with Russia remain valid,” she said.
The Chancellor emphasized that at the upcoming NATO summit “decisions will be made” regarding increasing the defense capabilities of the alliance.
In addition, Merkel again accused Moscow of “destabilizing the situation in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea,” noting that “the security situation in Europe has changed.”
