Merkel is trying to get Zelensky out of Putin’s trap – “ZN”
On the eve of the meeting in the Normandy format, German Chancellor Angela Merkel allegedly decided to help Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky avoid the traps set by Russian leader Vladimir Putin
The Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli” writes about this, citing its sources, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“As our Ukrainian diplomatic sources testify, the prospect of a one-on-one rendezvous between Zelensky and Putin seriously worries the German side.
An obvious confirmation of this is the call from Chancellor Merkel to the Ukrainian president the very next day after Putin's assistant Ushakov said, that a separate meeting of his patron with Zelensky “on the fields” of Normandy “will most likely take place.” Angela Merkel knows Putin very well and can advise Vladimir Zelensky on how to communicate with the owner of the Kremlin, where he can set traps and how not to fall into them,” the publication notes.
In addition, the publication does not rule out that Merkel will want to personally talk with the Ukrainian president in Paris before his meeting with Putin.
“Contrary to popular belief about the German Chancellor’s resentment against the Ukrainian President and the cooling of Ukrainian-German relations after publication of the ill-fated conversation Zelensky and Trump, our German sources claim that the chancellor is “not only a wise, but also a business person,” therefore he does not hold any grudge against his Ukrainian colleague and continues to work on the “Ukrainian track,” the weekly writes.
The publication also draws attention to the fact that Kyiv’s possible withdrawal from the Minsk agreements, which the Ukrainian authorities do not rule out, will not be welcomed by Ukraine’s Western partners.
“Berlin is very afraid that Kiev will not give Moscow any reason to accuse it of disrupting the Minsk agreements, since this will not only add to Russia’s arguments why it should not implement Minsk, but will also complicate the already increasingly difficult task Germany to preserve European unity regarding the continuation of anti-Russian sanctions,” ZN summarizes.
