“Relations between Berlin and Washington,” writes Bild, “have cracked. This is especially true in the run-up to the meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Obama in Washington.”
Germany does not support strengthening sanctions against Russia pushed by the United States. Disagreements also arose on the issue of Greece. Obama criticizes Angela Merkel for not being tough enough on Greece and insists on continued international lending to the country, while Greece begins a fight to restructure its debt and end IMF austerity measures.
A serious crack has also emerged on the issue of arms supplies to Ukraine. The day before, Obama said that there were discussions in the United States about the supply of lethal weapons to the pro-Western government in Kyiv. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier immediately reacted to this statement, and then Angela Merkel herself. Both politicians sharply refused to supply weapons to Kyiv, insisting on a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
“Germany will not support Ukraine with weapons. “I am firmly convinced that this conflict cannot be resolved by military means,” Merkel said on February 3 in Budapest.
