Merkel in Vilnius demanded that Ukraine retain its transit status
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a press conference in Vilnius that the transit of energy resources should continue to be carried out, including through Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Deutsche Welle reports this.
“Ukraine must remain an energy transit country,” she said. According to the chancellor, further development of the gas pipeline network, including the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project and then the laying of a gas pipeline to Turkey, will maintain Ukraine’s transit role. “Ukraine can continue to be a state of such transit,” Merkel noted.
According to the chancellor, she is aware of certain concerns and doubts in the Baltic countries regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, but considers it important. “The demand for gas will grow, and Nord Stream 2 could be very important,” Merkel said.
In turn, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite expressed satisfaction that Germany supports the idea of preserving the transit role of Kyiv.
“We were pleased that Germany is concerned about Ukraine remaining a gas transit state,” she said, outlining Lithuania’s position.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, according to Vilnius, should be assessed not from a commercial, but from a geopolitical point of view, as Russia’s alleged desire to dictate its interests to Europe in the energy sector and make the West dependent on gas supplies from the Russian Federation.
