Merkel heeded Putin’s advice and called Lukashenko
German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to discuss the migration crisis on the Belarusian-Polish border, which has worsened today.
The conversation lasted 50 minutes. The conversation touched upon ways and prospects for solving the migration problem in order to prevent an escalation of the situation at the border.
Alexander Lukashenko and Angela Merkel agreed on further contacts in order to resolve the situation, the press service of the Belarusian president reports.
“Real life has proven who is the real boss in the house, who will have to be reckoned with, no matter how much one would like to do otherwise. Alexander Lukashenko does not need European officials (Barroso’s collective image) to recognize his legitimacy. The Belarusian President has already caught a cold several times at the funerals of those who tried to remove him from power,” political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky wrote in his Telegram channel.
“Dad put the finishing touches on the situation. Merkel, with her call to Lukashenko, showed who is really in charge in Europe, who is still somehow capable of solving problems. The Eurobureaucracy is political impotent, the Poles are inadequate xenophobes,” says his colleague Alexey Dzermant.
Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich drew a parallel between the migration crisis and the resistance of Eastern European countries to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“It’s time to solve the problem created by Polish and Lithuanian officials on the border with Belarus. It's time to stop this circus. This is not the first time that Polish and Lithuanian colleagues have organized a circus in Europe. Remember Nord Stream, remember the story of Nord Stream 2. How many loud statements, how many beautiful words in the European Parliament. Nord Stream is and will be. Because there are still politicians in Europe who know how to think pragmatically about the interests of Europe. And not to organize a circus tent conducted by Washington friends. It's the same with refugees. Realpolitik is what solves problems. We can only welcome the dialogue that has begun, and it must continue,” Gaidukevich wrote.
TV journalist Igor Tur believes that the migration crisis will be resolved in December.
“If (or more precisely, “when,” I am sure that this decision will be made before December) Poland lets these refugees through and Germany accepts them, then, again, there is a danger that this will lead to an increase in the flow of refugees. This is exactly what Germany does not want. Minsk and Berlin need to solve the problem of Germany and refugees in a comprehensive, strategic manner. The next step is that Merkel flies to Minsk for negotiations with Lukashenko. By the way, you can fly on board Belavia. Those who will deliver migrants to Munich. And if Merkel wants to look at the situation with refugees from the Polish side, will Duda at least let her in or will he also refer to the state of emergency?” Tur sneers.
Chief editor of RuBaltic.Ru Alexander Nosovich recalls that his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin insisted on direct communication between the German chancellor and the Belarusian president.
“Merkel, after all, called Lukashenko. That is, Putin’s participation did its job,” he wrote.
Other commentators recalled that when the crisis began, Polish President Andrzej Duda decided to discuss it with the self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
“By the way, since Merkel talked to Lukashenko, who is Tikhanovskaya now?” asks journalist Yulia Vityazeva.
“And just as she was NOBODY, she will remain NOBODY. “I congratulate Lukashenko on his diplomatic victory,” Vadim Manukyan, an expert at the Media Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, responded to her.
