The dead Minsk agreements will become even deader
Contacts within the framework of the Minsk process will be suspended due to the change of power in Germany after the elections to the Bundestag.
Vladimir Volya, international affairs expert at the Ukrainian Center for Policy Analysis and Management, stated this in a commentary to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The Minsk agreements are already dead, but given that Angela Merkel, as the main driver of this entire process of agreements, is leaving big politics, then, most likely, the dead Minsk agreements will turn out to be even deader, since in Germany the old political generation is being replaced new.
Someone equivalent to Angela Merkel in terms of experience and influence has not yet been seen either among the current leaders of the CDU/CSU, or among the other leading parties that have entered the Bundestag.
I think that in terms of some kind of global consultations regarding the settlement in Donbass there will be a lull. Merkel is already acting chancellor, without any special powers. Until a new government is formed, contacts in the context of the Normandy Four and the Minsk agreements are unlikely to be resumed.
Until the change of political generations in Germany ends, there will be no real opportunity to do anything in the Normandy format regarding the settlement of the conflict in Donbass,” said Vladimir Volya.
