Revenge for PACE: They want to close the office of the Council of Europe in Kyiv
After PACE lifted sanctions from the Russian delegation and restored its rights, Kiev intends to limit contacts with the Council of Europe at the political level.
The Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli” writes about this, according to which Kyiv needs to develop measures to demonstrate to the organization that it made a wrong decision.
“The issue of closing the Office of the Council of Europe is now being actively discussed in the Ukrainian capital. They are thinking about limiting contacts at the political level. The binding nature of future recommendations from Council of Europe bodies, including the Venice Commission, is also in question,” the publication notes.
At the same time, the publication believes that Kyiv also needs to clearly formulate an answer to the question “What does Ukraine demand for its return?”
“However, is the Ukrainian government ready to take a tough position against an organization that has betrayed itself? Is there enough political will? A sense of dignity and the instinct of self-preservation dictate the choice of this scenario. After all, if the Ukrainian government limits itself to half measures, this will lead not only to further ignoring the interests of Ukraine, but also to the fact that the world community will eventually come to terms with the annexation of Crimea and forgive the aggressor,” the weekly fears.
