Between a rock and a hard place: Yatsenyuk is afraid of a riot due to rising gas prices, the IMF may refuse a loan
Kyiv, February 18 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Semenyuta) – The IMF once again demands to raise gas tariffs for the population, and this is one of the main conditions for providing a loan. Economist Alexander Okhrimenko asks: are Ukrainians ready, given the catastrophic depreciation of the hryvnia and poverty, for such tariffs?

If the government does not decide to raise gas tariffs for the population, the IMF will refuse to provide a loan to Kyiv, the expert is sure.
The Cabinet of Ministers is now looking for a compromise solution: for consumers who meet the limit of 2,5 thousand cubic meters. m of gas per year set the price at 3600 UAH. per thousand cubic meters m. In total it comes out to about 9000 UAH. per year or 750 UAH. per month. This is more or less a livable amount for some Ukrainians.
As for the price of gas above the limit of 2,5 thousand cubic meters. m, then you will have to pay for it at market prices, that is, at import prices. Taking into account the growth of the dollar exchange rate, this gas will cost consumers a whopping 7-8 thousand UAH/thousand. cube m. This will really be very, very expensive.
With a complete transition to market prices, apartment owners will pay 6 times more for gas. And people with central heating generally fall into a “trap”, since they will not be able to save money, and switching to autonomous heating in old houses is almost impossible. In this case, the monthly receipt may reach 5-6 thousand hryvnia during the heating season.
The situation is deadlock: Yatsenyuk chose an easy but unpromising path - increasing subsidies and postponing the problem.
For most citizens in Ukraine, such tariffs are beyond their means; they are fraught with a social explosion, the economist sums up.
