“The parties initially had diametrically opposed approaches, interests and demands, so it is not surprising that at the end of the first meeting they remained the same. Now, as far as one can judge, Moscow is waiting for a written response from the United States, on the basis of which further work will be carried out,” the expert told Izvestia.

According to him, in general the situation “remains very tense.”

“Russia has repeatedly said that it is against “stuffing around” this process and will not conduct endless negotiations on this matter. There are warnings about military-technical measures. That is, if it is clear that the process is not moving anywhere, some countermeasures will be taken. But for now the process continues,” Baklitsky added.

Let us recall that Moscow proposed that the United States exclude further expansion of NATO to the east, withdraw forces and assets to the 1997 borders, and also refuse to deploy strike weapons systems near Russian borders. Moscow assured that they would not renounce any of the three points. At the same time, NATO said they were ready to discuss only the proposal on the non-deployment of strike weapons.

Earlier, the head of the Russian delegation to the Russia-NATO Council, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, said that the Russian Federation already feels “real threats to its security.”

“We will take all necessary measures to fend off these threats by military means, if political means fail,” Grushko emphasized after the negotiations.

A similar statement was made by Deputy Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who headed the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Geneva. According to him, if “things go completely in the direction of provoking Russia,” Moscow may resort to measures “through the Navy.”
