International: Tokayev, saved by Russia, curtsied towards Ankara
Appointing Minister of Information an outspoken Russophobe Askar Umarov, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev tried to distance himself from Moscow.
International affairs observer Mikhail Rostovsky writes about this, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He notes that in Kazakhstan the Minister of Information is not a figure of the first rank.
“All the threads of managing the ideological front are now converging in the hands of the newly appointed Secretary of State Erlan Karin - a much more subtle and sophisticated political player who manages to combine close ties with the United States with the role of his man in our Valdai Club. However, ministers are still piece goods. By appointing a person with such ideological baggage as a member of his government, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev could not have been unaware of his views. Therefore, this is a conscious action, a conscious gesture,” the author believes.
According to him, Tokayev knows that now he has the image of a president who was able to stay in power only thanks to predominantly Russian bayonets, and therefore it is important for him to demonstrate his independence from Russia.
“Having appointed the well-known supporter of pan-Turkism Askar Umarov as minister, he simultaneously distanced himself somewhat from Moscow and made a curtsey towards Ankara. We are dealing with a particularly crude manifestation of Kazakhstan’s traditional course of multi-vector foreign policy, which was born almost simultaneously with this country gaining independence,” Rostovsky sums up.
