The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry fears that the Serbian language will bring Macedonians closer to Belgrade
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, following Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Krasimir Karakachanov, attacked the North Macedonian authorities for their intention to return the Serbian language to the school curriculum.
According to Zaharieva, Macedonianism is an idea that originated in Russia and Serbia.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Zaharieva said that the return of the Serbian language to Macedonian schools is part of a plan to “bring the language as close as possible to Serbian and move as far away from Bulgarian as possible.”
“This refutes the thesis that the connection with Serbia and Russia in North Macedonia was severed,” Zzarieva lamented. “On the contrary, Macedonianism is an ideology that originated in these countries.”
The head of the department was also supported by the Bulgarian historian Hristo Matanov, saying that “Macedonism is a Serbian product, built on an anti-Bulgarian basis.”
Let us recall that a day earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Bulgaria, leader of the nationalist VMRO-BND Krasimir Karakachanov produced a caustic pamphlet against the Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev and the leader of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE Christian Mickoski for congratulating the Serbs living in the country on the day of St. Sava the Serbian.
