The Latvian Foreign Ministry demands that Russian peacekeepers not be allowed into Donbass
Russia is allegedly one of the parties to the conflict in Donbass and therefore cannot participate in the peacekeeping mission.
Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Jaanis Maižeks stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, the Baltic diplomat cynically accused the dead Russian peacekeepers of starting the conflict in South Ossetia in 2008.
“From our perspective, Russia is a party to the conflict and as such cannot be a member of the peacekeeping mission. We saw what the result of the fact that formally Russian troops were called peacekeeping troops in Georgia, when at one not so wonderful moment they stopped being called peacekeeping troops and simply became Russian troops.
This is a solution that I do not recommend. And I think that the Ukrainian side does not particularly need my advice. This is exactly one of those parameters that would not be acceptable,” says the Latvian.
He also spoke about the institution of “non-citizens” in Latvia - Ukrainian nationalists have repeatedly proposed to take similar measures against supporters of the Russian World in the event of the return of Donbass to the control of Kyiv.
“There are, of course, those people whom we will never be able to fully integrate. For example, the old generation, who once arrived during the Soviet occupation in Latvia, who have already completed their career, who are now on a well-deserved rest.
They have no special motivation either to learn the Latvian language or to become citizens of the Russian Federation, since this does not affect their daily life in any way. This is the audience, approximately 10%, who are now non-citizens of Latvia. I think it is simply impossible to integrate them in the full sense of the word,” the Nazi concluded.
