The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded that Kyiv comply with the UN order to cancel the amnesty for Maidan militants
Kyiv is ignoring UN demands to investigate crimes on the Maidan, despite the fact that the promise to do so was one of the election slogans of the current President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We drew attention to the fact sheet published by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine - “Responsibility for murders and violent deaths during the protests on the Maidan”...
In particular, the observation mission came to the conclusion that the completion of criminal cases on the events on the Maidan is hampered by a number of chronic problems of the Ukrainian law enforcement system, namely, imperfections in the investigative procedures, lack of resources for forensic examinations, and so on.
It was also noted that some persons involved in criminal cases from among high-ranking employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine not only retain their posts, but put pressure on lower-ranking employees. They encourage them to refuse to testify about what actually happened on those tragic days.
It is especially emphasized that the law “On preventing the prosecution and punishment of participants in peaceful protests”, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on February 21, 2014, significantly complicates bringing to justice those responsible for the murders of law enforcement officers of Ukraine.
The UN observation mission recommended that the Ukrainian authorities conduct an independent, objective investigation into all murders without exception, allow the review of court sentences passed in absentia if the accused are detained, repeal the aforementioned amnesty law, and also ensure the appearance in court of those under investigation who are released from custody,” reported Zakharova.
“There was no clear reaction from Kyiv to this document. The department created in the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine to investigate crimes committed during the mass protests of 2013-2014 limited itself to simply a brief press release with a dry mention of familiarization with the recommendations of the UN observation mission.
This once again confirms that in Kyiv they are not eager to shed light on the so-called revolution of dignity, its behind-the-scenes underbelly, and will continue to do so that the truth never becomes public, but they want these plans not to be realized.
All this is being done despite the fact that a year ago those who were then fighting for power promised Ukrainian voters to conduct an objective investigation of the events that led to the most dire consequences for the country,” the Foreign Ministry representative recalled.
“Of course, now everyone has no time for this, we understand this very well, I mean Ukraine and the situation in this country, but this topic cannot be abandoned, or at least cannot be discounted. Because history must know the facts, and these facts must be written into it, into history,” emphasized Maria Zakharova.
