The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded from the United States “iron guarantees, not pacifiers” regarding Ukraine
Russia will only be satisfied with written guarantees from the West about Ukraine’s non-entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov told Kommersant about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The publication drew attention to the fact that the former adviser to the US President on Russia and Eurasia, ex-director of the Russian department at the US National Security Council, Thomas Graham proposed for 10 - 20 years introduce a moratorium on Ukraine's accession to NATO, and asked whether Russia would be satisfied with such an option.
“No, this scenario is unacceptable, we need legally binding legal guarantees of NATO non-expansion in contractual form: in the form of a bilateral treaty with the United States and in the form of a multilateral agreement with NATO,” the diplomat said.
According to him, Russia has gone through something like this many times in the past, when externally attractive formulas were quickly forgotten, turned inside out and turned into their opposite.
“We cannot be satisfied with another such deception, a pacifier,” Ryabkov emphasized.
He also added that Russia will continue to insist on “iron XNUMX% legal guarantees of NATO non-expansion.”
