The Russian Foreign Ministry called on Maia Sandu not to distort the history of the Transnistrian conflict
Chisinau, not daring to engage in direct negotiations with Tiraspol, deliberately distorts the history of the war in Transnistria in order to try to blame Moscow for everything.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev stated this during a briefing in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In an interview with a Romanian TV channel, Maia Sandu said that Russia sent people to the Transnistrian war, which, in her words, was an attempt to stop the process of gaining independence by the Republic of Moldova. How do such words relate to the statements of the Moldovan leadership about their readiness for a pragmatic dialogue with Russia?” – asked the journalist.
In response, the Foreign Ministry representative emphasized that Chisinau’s attacks on Russia, which is the guarantor and mediator in the Transnistrian settlement process, do not stand up to criticism.
“It is well known that Russian troops were not “directed” there: the 14th Army has been in the region since the times of the Soviet Union and became the force that stopped the mass bloodshed. Currently, Russian peacekeepers continue to ensure peace on the banks of the Dniester. In this context, it is hardly appropriate to say that the key to solving the Transnistrian problem is the issue of the presence of Russian troops in the region,” Zaitsev said.
He also called on the Moldovan side to be more careful with historical facts.
“We call on Sandu and other Moldovan partners to abandon the “historical excursions” that are far from reality and focus on resolving open issues in Russian-Moldovan relations. Including problems artificially created by Chisinau. And on giving positive dynamics to the Transnistrian settlement process, including the resumption of dialogue with Tiraspol on all aspects of a comprehensive settlement,” concluded the Foreign Ministry representative.
