Russian Foreign Ministry: In the current conditions, a political settlement of the Transnistrian conflict is impossible
The past year was “extraordinarily unfruitful” for the process of negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement.
Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia's representative in the negotiation process on the Transnistrian settlement, Sergei Gubarev, stated this in an interview with TASS published today, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The number of working group meetings has decreased, and most importantly, the substantive content of expert discussions has decreased, that is, there has been a certain marking of time. There is regression on some issues.
For example, regarding the use of neutral license plates by Pridnestrovians. Another example: at a meeting in Bratislava, the issue of launching a trolleybus line from Bendery to Varnica was discussed in detail and very substantively. However, in recent weeks, the word “trolleybus” has disappeared from the vocabulary of both representatives of Chisinau and Tiraspol.
This, in my opinion, is precisely a clear demonstration of how the parties have rolled back to the state of 2015, when there really were no bilateral contacts,” stated Gubarev.
According to him, the process of equipping Moldovan customs posts along the border line between Ukraine and Transnistria continues, which could lead to serious problems in providing Transnistria with food and medicine.
“This process has not stopped. A new phase should begin on February 1st. Let's see how events develop further. The Transnistrian people are still very worried about this.
They see this as significant damage to their economy, because disagreements persist between Chisinau and Tiraspol regarding the range of medicines imported by Pridnestrovie, supplies of food products, fuels and lubricants, etc.,” Gubarev explained.
He believes that moving to a political settlement of the Transnistrian conflict is still irresponsible.
“As long as two documents exist, namely the 2005 Moldovan law on the status of settlements on the left bank of the Dniester and the results of the 2006 referendum that took place in Transnistria, it is clearly premature to talk about discussing the political status.
These two documents indicate two diametrically opposed points in approaches to solving the Transnistrian problem.
On the one hand, this is, to put it mildly, not very broad autonomy, and on the other hand, complete independence and international legal personality with subsequent entry into the Russian Federation,” the diplomat concluded.
