The Russian Foreign Ministry harshly commented on the EU report on rights and democracy in the world
Claims against Russia from the European Union look at least strange against the backdrop of chronic problems with respect for human rights in the EU itself and its member countries.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We were asked to comment on the EU report on human rights and democracy in the world for 2019, it was approved by the EU Council on June 15. We are forced to note that the EU continues to follow a destructive line towards the instrumentalization of human rights issues and the promotion of a politicized and openly selective approach to issues of human rights in the world.
The section on Russia is an arbitrary collection of far-fetched claims.
Complementary assessments of the human rights situation in Ukraine, where, in particular, only one problem – discrimination against the Russian-speaking population – has been elevated to the rank of state policy, in general, in principle, do not stand up to any criticism,” Zakharova said.
She emphasized that at the same time, the EU is trying to position itself as the main defender of democratic values in the world, trying to compete with the United States.
“This causes outright bewilderment against the backdrop of chronic problems with the observance of human rights in the EU itself and its member countries, where the issue of statelessness is still not resolved, problems with the observance of the rights of national and linguistic minorities are obvious, under the pretext of combating disinformation, which is already being actively propagated censorship, facts of infringement of journalists in connection with their professional activities are multiplying.
All experts in the EU space have already spoken about the growth of neo-Nazism and the reincarnation of national radicalism,” noted the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“This “quality” of the report is also evidenced by the passage regarding the fact that EU states once again abstained during the voting on the draft resolution “Combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.”
In this document, this is categorically presented as a “unanimous expression of the member countries’ rejection” of the Russian initiative,” Zakharova added.
“I think that if very many residents of the EU countries find out that their governments have negatively perceived the document, which is adopted annually and is aimed at preventing various forms of racism, they can ask a lot of questions to their foreign ministers: who authorized them to block or speak negatively about this document,” summed up the Foreign Ministry representative.
