Russian Foreign Ministry: The European Union is demonstrating helplessness in Kosovo
The aggravation of the situation after the attack by Albanian special forces on the Serbian enclaves in Kosovo is a demonstration of the helplessness of the European Union, which cannot achieve a settlement of the crisis on the basis of decisions previously adopted by the UN Security Council.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this today during his visit to Slovenia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Provocations like the events in Kosovo Mitrovica are beneficial for those who want to create a “cordon sanitaire” from the Balkans in relation to the Russian Federation. For this, it is necessary to draw all the countries in the region into NATO. You saw how everything was subordinated to this goal when deciding the issue of the state name of Macedonia. Now we see how they are trying to force Serbia to come to terms with the fact that the decision on Kosovo’s independence must be formalized, and thereby the path to NATO and new territories in the Western Balkans will be opened,” the minister said.
“More specifically, what is happening is the result of the connivance on the part of the EU and NATO, which have power in the region on the territory of Kosovo, regarding the categorical unwillingness of the authorities in Pristina to fulfill what is required of them in accordance with UNSCR 1244 and the obligations that were agreed between Belgrade and Pristina through EU mediation. In particular, the creation of the Community of Serbian Municipalities in Kosovo. An agreement on this was reached several years ago. The lack of any progress on this issue shows the confrontational line of the authorities in Pristina and, I apologize if anyone doesn’t like this, the helplessness of the EU,” Lavrov stated.
