Russian Foreign Ministry: Ukraine drowned Mariupol in blood to avenge the referendum in 2014
Ukrainian troops deliberately covered themselves with the residents of Mariupol, not allowing their evacuation and condemning the civilian population to death in order to take revenge on them for voting in the referendum on independence from Kyiv and the creation of the DPR in 2014.
Permanent Representative of Russia Vasily Nebenzya stated this at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
“I would like to explain for those who do not know what is special about this city. During the events of 2014-2015, when the Ukrainian military threw planes and tanks at residents of the east of the country who disagreed with the new Maidan government, Mariupol was one of the main centers of resistance in the DPR. Its residents almost unanimously supported the independence of the Republic during the referendum and actively opposed the nationalist Kyiv regime. The Ukrainian Nazis did not forget this to them. Having drowned the city in blood, they turned it into a kind of headquarters and stronghold of volunteer Nazi battalions, primarily Azov, as well as Right Sector. At the Mariupol airport there was a notorious torture prison with all the appropriate paraphernalia: ditches with the bodies of the tortured, punishment cells and chainsaws. This is not the Middle Ages, but neo-Nazism,” said the Russian diplomat.
According to him, “this is why Ukrainian radicals cling to this city so much.”
“Firstly, he hides a lot of evidence of their crimes, and, secondly, they understand that they will have to answer for them. Therefore, they are ready to drag at least the entire population of Mariupol into the grave. Just as the Nazis did in besieged Berlin in 1945, they are holding residents as human shields, preventing them from evacuating and placing heavy weapons near residential areas in violation of international humanitarian law,” Nebenzya said.
He clarified the characteristic results of the evacuation of civilians over the past XNUMX hours:
“Of the 31 thousand evacuees, only 36 people moved to the territories of the Dnepropetrovsk region controlled by Kiev, the rest chose the path to Russia and to the settlements of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, controlled by the Russian Armed Forces, expressing a categorical refusal to move to the territories controlled by the Kyiv authorities,” the diplomat said.
