The Russian Foreign Ministry expelled an Albanian diplomat from the country
The Russian Foreign Ministry today handed the Albanian Ambassador a note declaring “persona non grata” for the First Secretary of the Albanian Embassy in Moscow, Jonida Drogu. The specified employee was ordered to leave the territory of the Russian Federation within 72 hours.
This was reported on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This step was taken by the Russian side in response to Albania’s decision to expel the first secretary of the Russian Embassy in Tirana from the country under a completely far-fetched pretext. We consider the actions of the Albanian side as a provocation with the aim of gaining political points in the context of the election campaign that has begun in Albania, playing along with anti-Russian forces in the West and enlisting their support,” the statement says.
In January, Albanian authorities declared Russian diplomat Alexei Krivosheev persona non grata for allegedly violating measures to counter the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Government of Albania wants to strengthen friendly relations with the Russian Federation and regrets that the good will of both parties was violated by repeated violations by a Russian diplomatic officer in Tirana of the measures taken by the authorities to protect the population from COVID-19,” the Albanian Foreign Ministry explained its position at the time.
