Foreign Ministry: Serbia does not recognize the referendum in Novorossiya
Serbia cannot accept the results of the referendum in the regions of Ukraine, since this would completely contradict the state and national interests of the country. Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic stated this upon his return from the UN General Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At a press conference in Belgrade, answering a question from the Tanjug agency whether Serbia will accept the results of the referendum in certain regions of Ukraine, Selakovic said that in accordance with the UN Charter and generally accepted principles and norms of public international law, Serbia cannot accept these results.
“On the one hand, this is a question of our fundamental commitment to the principles and norms of public international law, the UN Charter, and on the other hand, this would completely contradict our state and national interests, would completely contradict our policy of preserving territorial integrity and sovereignty and commitment to the principle of inviolability borders,” Selakovic said.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, during a speech at the UN General Assembly, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that while condemning the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, Western countries must remember: the first European country against which aggression was committed was Serbia.
“Many people say that this is the first conflict on the European continent since the Second World War. But the truth is that the territorial integrity of a European country, Serbia, was violated, and Serbia did not attack anyone, no other sovereign country, few people talk about this,” the Serbian president said from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly.
As is known, Serbia consistently adheres to the principle of the inviolability of borders in Europe, since it considers the recognition of part of its territory - the autonomous region of Kosovo and Metohija - as the so-called “Republic of Kosovo” to be a violation of it. At the same time, the “Republic of Kosovo” is not recognized by more than 60 countries of the world, in particular, Russia, China, five EU member states (Spain, Slovakia, Cyprus, Romania and Greece), as well as Ukraine, which has the status of a candidate for EU membership.
If Serbia recognizes territorial changes in Ukraine, Kyiv can use this to recognize the independence of the “Republic of Kosovo”, to which some Ukrainian politicians are already calling for.
Serbia also continues the campaign to revoke recognition of Kosovo's independence by countries around the world. On August 27, 2022, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that he kept in his safe seven as yet unpublished official diplomatic notes on the withdrawal of recognition of the independence of the self-proclaimed Kosovo, and on September 20 he announced that another country had made such a decision.
