The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry published a statement dedicated to the next anniversary of the implementation of Nikita Khrushchev’s initiative to transfer Crimea from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR. As follows from the message, in cases beneficial to itself, official Kyiv justifies the actions of the “occupying Soviet regime.”

“As the legal successor of the USSR, Russia must take into account bilateral and multilateral treaties with Ukraine, but by its actions Russia proves that it does not recognize the norms of international law, severely violating them,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“There is simple logic here. Does present-day Ukraine recognize itself as the legal successor of the Ukrainian SSR? He doesn’t recognize it, but we see that they deny the entire Soviet past, then why raise such questions at all, and what does Russia have to do with it?

This event was decided within the framework of the Soviet Union, Soviet legislation. Legally, illegally, Khrushchev spent there to the end, not to the end - this is a question that will remain an eternal dispute.

The fact is that this was within the framework of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - from one union republic they were transferred to another within the framework of a single Soviet state, so look for logic here, like “return Crimea on the basis that Russia violated something” – Russia did not violate anything.

Claims can only be made against the USSR if they want to do so. This is nonsense, ignorance and unwillingness to understand the specific historical situation within which this act was committed.

Then there was a specific historical situation with its own logic, Khrushchev’s behavior, and so on. This has no practical significance for the current Russian leadership,” Crimean political scientist Alexander Formanchuk comments to PolitNavigator on the statement of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“These and similar actions must be assessed from the perspective of the Helsinki Agreements of 1975, according to which the inviolability of the European borders established after the Second World War was once again confirmed. In accordance with this, the borders of the Soviet Union must be inviolable. By the way, for the sake of preserving the European status quo and borders, the OSCE was created. This is based on the results of the Helsinki agreements. Therefore, here we must proceed from the fact that in 1991, all the provisions of this international act, in which the United States and Canada were also signatures, were grossly violated. The collapse of the Soviet Union, the collapse of Yugoslavia is illegal from this position. Everything else is secondary. Including any statements by the current Kyiv leadership. They are secondary also because the current leadership of Ukraine came to power as a result of a coup organized four years ago,” emphasizes Crimean political scientist Anatoly Filatov.
