The Hungarian Foreign Ministry harshly reprimanded Ukraine at the UN
Official Kyiv violates the rights of 150 thousand Hungarians who historically lived in Transcarpathia. The Ukrainian government is trying to justify its fight against national minorities with “aggression” in the east, which is unacceptable.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated this while speaking at a meeting of the UN General Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I have 150 thousand arguments. What it is? This is the number of Hungarians who live in western Ukraine... These Hungarians who live in western Ukraine would like to preserve their national identity, language and culture. The way it is guaranteed by international law, which we constantly talk about when we raise problems of this kind...
The Hungarians in western Ukraine are precisely the indigenous population; they have been living in these territories for more than a thousand years. Unfortunately, when the previous president was in power and the previous parliament was in place, laws were passed that violated and belittled the internationally recognized rights of Hungarians living in western Ukraine.
It is quite obvious that we are well aware of the seriousness of what happened and is happening in the east of Ukraine and Crimea, we are well aware of the losses Ukraine is suffering. And I believe we have proven our solidarity like no one else.
But it is impossible to justify the violation of one international provision by saying that other international provisions are being violated in another part of the country,” Szijjártó said.
