The first fire occurred in Moria at two in the morning. Thirty-five migrants who were diagnosed with coronavirus and intended to be isolated along with members of their families and those with whom they were likely in contact are suspected of arson.

These people were supposed to be taken out of the camp, but they refused to leave it, some fled to a nearby olive grove, but were caught, after which the arson began. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they were pelted with stones.

While the tents and temporary buildings of the camp were burning, the migrants sang in chorus: “Burn, Moriah, farewell!”

Moria burned almost completely, and what remained burned out as a result of the second arson, which happened at 7:00 in the morning. As a result, more than a thousand people, including women and children, were left without temporary shelter; many fled to the mountains, some marched towards the capital of the island, the city of Mytilene.

Local residents reported that fleeing migrants started arson in other places.

As a result, by order of Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias and by decision of Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, a state of emergency was declared in Lesbos for a period of four months.
