The Bandera march that took place in Kyiv yesterday was not as numerous as in previous years, and this inspires some optimism, Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky told PolitNavigator.

“The fact that there were fewer people on the march than before is an encouraging sign. People are starting to get tired of this primitive misanthropic ideology. The drive “we can do anything, we are now the main ones in the country” is slowly disappearing.

The reduction in the number of participants in the torchlight procession was apparently influenced by many factors, including Saakashvili’s not very successful attempts to raise the people. He is an ally of the nationalists; they are united by hatred of Russia. But Saakashvili half failed.

The current government is also inspired by nationalism, but the results of its activities are somehow pathetic. All this is superimposed on each other, people are slowly starting to come to their senses. We see that many people begin to change their shoes on the fly, saying that “they were mistaken, they expected one thing, but got something else,” but most often this is not sincere,” comments Pogrebinsky.

His colleague, political scientist Alexander Semchenko, notes that, unlike Kyiv, Bandera’s marches in the provinces turned out to be quite widespread.

“There were fewer people at the torchlight procession in Kyiv, but in the regions there were quite a lot of them at such processions. The fact that there were fewer of them in Kyiv is due to the fact that in Kyiv there is a “whistle” where the protest goes out. I mean Saakashvili and his marches for impeachment. Those who wanted to go and protest already went and protested. In other cities there is no such “whistle”, so a lot of people came out there,” says Semchenko.
