Mikhail Pogrebinsky on the far-reaching consequences of the sanctions list
The current Russian sanctions against a number of individuals and companies in Ukraine will not lead to serious consequences, but will make many of the Ukrainian elite think. Mikhail Pogrebinsky, director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, stated this on the Rossiya 24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We need some time to study this list and the consequences of applying these sanctions for the Ukrainian economy. But it is already clear that Russia, regardless of faces, has decided to begin the process of putting pressure on Ukraine through economic sanctions. What happened can be seen as the beginning of a process that could have far-reaching consequences.
These sanctions now will not lead to catastrophic consequences, for example, to those that sanctions for a complete refusal to supply petroleum products or a complete refusal to sell fuel rods could lead to. Since this would affect the lives of millions of people, such decisions are not made.
These are private decisions, different for different people. For example, there are people on this list who would view these sanctions as an order. These are, for example, Nitsoi and Farion - they were recognized as serious enemies of Russia, which is funny. There are many who will not feel any problems directly for themselves; these are people from the so-called. civil society such as Nayema, Leshchenko, etc., which do not have assets in the Russian Federation. They will not suffer, but will be positioned as enemies of Russia.
But there are people there who were not particularly exposed in the war against Russia. I don’t understand how much harm a deputy from the Opposition Bloc brings to Russia. That is, regardless of what position people declare, there are some grounds for making decisions about specific people. I think for many this is a reason to think about their future actions.
In fact, the entire main body of oligarchs is under sanctions. I didn't expect this. This includes oligarchs who work with the Opposition Bloc. There are oligarchs who have not been particularly prominent, but it is known that they finance Yulia Tymoshenko. And this is not an exhaustive list.
There are many businesses that are controlled by people on this list that are not yet on the list of businesses. That is, this is an open list that can be supplemented and create more and more problems for Ukrainian business and the economy,” he said.
