Millions of Ukrainians will have to fight for survival - sociologist
In Ukraine, quarantine and a drop in production will deprive many people of their source of income, who will not be able to feed themselves during the crisis.
The head of the sociological company Research & Branding Group, Evgeniy Kopatko, stated this on News-Front, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now countries are completely closing down and tens, hundreds of thousands of people are stuck in one country, tens of thousands in another. Some of the migrant workers cannot return; they cannot somehow get to Ukraine. But that's not all, now there is a deferred action that will occur in a month, because someone will run out of the scarce resources that they have now, supplies.
Then purchasing power drops sharply, this is the next step. Then the person will be nervous about where to make money, where to find money. But this simply does not exist in Ukraine. Yes, Ukraine is an agricultural country, there are vegetable gardens, some people will survive. And the rest who work for hire, and the rest who are not accustomed to physical labor? What will these people do?
I ask myself a question purely professionally: where will millions of people go? Where will the millions of migrant workers who bring in 10 percent of Ukraine’s GDP go? Where will tens of thousands of young people go who, in principle, do not have the skills to work on the land or to work with their hands in production? Where will people go who, in principle, consider themselves politically active?
Trust in government is rapidly declining. The authorities have a chance to use violence, show character, and mobilize. Will the government be able to do this? I don’t know, I’m not ready to say,” Kopatko said.
