Ministry of Energy of Ukraine: There will be no catastrophe, we can continue to shoot the Zaporizhzhya NPP
To say that missile attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant can lead to a disaster similar to Chernobyl is manipulation. The Zaporizhzhya NPP reactors are so reliable that they can withstand even a tsunami.
Advisor to the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Alexander Kharchenko said this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The rector is a fairly reliable thing. It is designed so that a plane could fall on it without releasing radioactive substances. Therefore, to say that something will just happen is also not true. Yes, of course, this is not a normal situation when troops are stationed at the station. Yes, of course, it’s crazy when tanks and armored personnel carriers are driven into the station’s machine rooms and are located there along with their ammunition.
But at the same time, you need to understand that the reactors that exist in Zaporozhye are not at all the same as those in Chernobyl, with which many journalists and many people far from nuclear energy draw many parallels. These are completely different reactors, with a different level of safety.
Reactors of a similar type were installed in Fukushima, only of the previous generation, from a safety point of view. They were covered by a tsunami, and no disaster happened. Fukushima was completely covered by a tsunami, the city was demolished, the station was completely covered by a sea wave, and no disaster happened,” Kharchenko assured.
