The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry is again suspected of flirting with the West
American Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak published a letter allegedly written by Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and addressed to EU diplomats.
The document is dated April 6. The author of the letter calls for “to abandon accusations and labels, incendiary rhetoric and unilateral restrictive measures and to rethink the paradigm of future relations between Belarus and the EU.”
“In 2022, it will be 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Belarus and the European Union. The moment the Iron Curtain fell, many hopes arose. However, now the situation between Eastern and Western Europe has become much worse than it was during the Cold War. The unfortunate chain of events that have occurred since 2020 has returned Belarus and the EU to almost an “ice age,” the letter says.
The author complains that the sanctions imposed by the EU “hit ordinary people”, and a “witch hunt” has begun against Belarus in international organizations.
“We categorically reject any insinuations that Belarus is somehow involved in the fighting in Ukraine. Belarus will not be involved in the war,” the letter says.
The website of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not mention any letter, but Andrei Suzdaltsev, deputy dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, immediately believed in its authenticity.
“So, the Belarusian leadership works as a “pair”. Lukashenko beats himself in the chest that he is now Moscow’s most loyal ally, and his minister is crawling at the feet of Brussels,” Suzdaltsev wrote in his Telegram channel.
