Minsk political scientist-Maidan activist: The top of the opposition has been neutralized
The arrested Belarusian oppositionist and one of the leaders of anti-government protests, Maria Kolesnikova, does not pose a serious threat to the authorities.
As reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent, Vitaly Karbalevich, a Belarusian political scientist who sympathizes with the anti-Lukashenko opposition and an employee of the US State Department-funded Radio Liberty, stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“There is no need to physically get rid of Maria Kolesnikova. She does not pose such a threat to the authorities to take any radical actions. It would be enough to put her in jail. The country went through a stage when opponents were physically eliminated. The authorities understood all the disadvantages of this approach and learned that there are simpler methods that do not cause such a negative resonance. Therefore, Kolesnikova was neutralized, like everyone else: Babariko, Tikhanovsky, Vlasova, Maxim Znak and many other people,” the expert said.
“It is noteworthy that there was a certain sabotage of Lukashenko’s instructions in the prosecutor’s office and they even had to fire the prosecutor general,” added Karbalevich. – Addressing the new prosecutor, Lukashenko asked not to pay too much attention to the law, following his instructions. This is an attempt to intimidate and mobilize department employees. It’s hard to say what will happen next, but so far the new prosecutor has taken to his job very zealously.”
As PolitNavigator reported, Kolesnikova, according to the official version of the authorities, was detained while trying to illegally cross the border, and according to the opposition, after she resisted forced deportation to Ukraine and tore up her passport. She is currently arrested as a suspect in a case of violent seizure of power.
