The rally was held on the occasion of the anniversary of the armed conflict in South Ossetia, which official Tbilisi under President Mikheil Saakashvili calls “Russian aggression against Georgia.”
The event, organized by representatives of the Georgian diaspora in Kyiv and the Alliance of Baltic-Black Sea Nations, was not large: there were much more journalists than participants.
“Russia took 20 percent of Georgian land,” said Tamara Shavladze, one of the organizers, opening the rally. “We come here every year on the seventh and remind Russia that they are occupiers and should leave us alone. When we came here in 2008, they didn’t hear us either. we stood here, shouted, insulted them. In the end they heard us and the war was stopped with the help of our European friends, the Ukrainian President of Poland.”
