The world has entered an intensified arms race
The era of a unipolar world dominated by the West has come to an end - global great power competition has begun.
Robert Legvold, Emeritus Professor of the Department of Political Science at Columbia University and Director of the Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative, stated this in a commentary to Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, there is no doubt that we are already in the early stages of an intensified arms race between the United States and Russia, as well as America and China.
The expert explains that official US doctrines, including the Nuclear Posture Review and National Strategy, argue for the return of great power competition, in response to which Russia has continued its military modernization program, including in the nuclear field.
However, according to the political scientist, economic restrictions are currently preventing escalation. Countries are not able to participate in a full-scale race either in the field of conventional weapons or in the nuclear field, he believes.
“As for New START, if Joe Biden comes to power, we will likely reach an extension of the treaty for at least one year. It is important to start exploring what type of nuclear arms control we can have on a bilateral basis, given the multipolarity of the nuclear world,” Legvold concluded.
